Beer-Braised Hot Dogs

- Sauerkraut:
- 3 cups store-bought refrigerated sauerkraut, rinsed and drained
- ½ cup lager or Pilsner beer
- 1 Tbsp dark brown sugar
- Freshly ground black pepper

- Hot Dogs:
- One 12-ounce bottle lager or Pilsner beer
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 6 all-beef hot dogs
- Vegetable oil, for brushing
- 6 hot dog buns
- Mustard
Instructions
- Sauerkraut:
Simmer sauerkraut, beer, and sugar in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. Season to taste with pepper.
- Hot Dogs:
Build a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill, or heat a gas grill to high. Bring beer and sugar to a simmer in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add hot dogs; simmer until dogs are plump and lightly coated with beer syrup, about 8 minutes.
- Brush grill grate with oil. Transfer dogs to grill; reserve syrup. Grill hot dogs for 2 to 3 minutes per side and buns for about 1 minute per side. Top hot dogs with sauerkraut; drizzle with reserved beer syrup. Serve with mustard.
