    Basic Biscuits

    From "The Lady & Sons Savannah Country Cookbook"

    List of Ingredients


    • 1 package yeast
    • ½ cup lukewarm water
    • 5 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 tsp baking soda
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 Tbsp baking powder
    • 2 Tbsp sugar
    • ¾ cup shortening
    • 2 cups buttermilk


    Instructions


    1. Preheat oven to 400° F. Dissolve yeast in water and set aside.

    2. Mix together flour, baking soda, salt, baking powder and sugar. Cut shortening into the dry ingredients. Mix in yeast and buttermilk.

    3. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to desired thickness. Cut out with a biscuit cutter. Place biscuits on a greased or sprayed baking sheet. Bake for about 12 minutes.

      Makes about 3 dozen biscuits.
