    Apple and Spice Baked French Toast

    List of Ingredients


    • 1 (1-pound) loaf unsliced French or Italian bread
    • 8 large eggs
    • 1 cup sugar, divided
    • 3½ cups milk
    • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract
    • 6 to 8 medium Granny Smith apples
    • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
    • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
    • 2 Tbsp butter
    • Warm maple syrup
    • Whipped cream


    Instructions


    1. Slice bread into 1½-inch-thick slices. Arrange bread slices tightly together in a lightly greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish. Beat eggs, ½ cup sugar, milk, and vanilla with a wire whisk until blended. Pour half of egg mixture over bread.

    2. Peel, core, and slice enough apples to measure about 8½ cups. Place sliced apple over bread to cover. Pour remaining half of egg mixture over apple. Combine remaining ½ cup sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg; sprinkle evenly over apple. Dot with butter. Cover and chill at least 8 hours.

    3. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1 hour. Remove from oven, and let stand 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Cut into squares, and serve with warm maple syrup; top with whipped cream.

      Makes 8 servings.
