Recipe Introduction
"Troy's breakfast of choice is usually French toast. And until I created this recipe, he thought he was the best at making it. I'm excited to share this French toast recipe because it really is unbelievably delicious with its combination of vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a toasted almond garnish. The important thing to note about this recipe is that it should be prepared in advance, which means you'll have it ready to pop in the oven bright and early on a special weekend morning."
List of Ingredients
French Toast:
â—¦ 12 thick slices white bread
â—¦ 7 eggs
â—¦ 2 ¼ cups whole milk
â—¦ ¾ cup whipping cream
â—¦ ¼ cup packed dark brown sugar
â—¦ 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
â—¦ 2 teaspoons cinnamon
â—¦ ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
â—¦ ½ cup toasted sliced almonds, for garnish
â—¦ Powdered sugar, for garnish
Brown Sugar Sauce:
â—¦ 1 â…“ cups whipping cream
â—¦ 1 cup packed light brown sugar
â—¦ 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
â—¦ 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
â—¦ Pinch of sea salt
Recipe
Grease a 13 by 9-inch baking dish. Arrange the bread in a shingle pattern in the baking dish so that about half of each slice overlaps the piece next to it.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until combined. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Preheat the oven to 350° F.
Remove the plastic wrap from the baking dish and bake for 50 to 60 minutes, until the bread is slightly puffed and golden brown on top. If the bread starts to brown early on, cover the baking dish with foil.
To make the brown sugar sauce, combine the cream, brown sugar, butter, vanilla, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat to simmer for 5 minutes.
Sprinkle the almonds over the French toast and use a fine mesh sieve to dust lightly with powdered sugar. Let cool for about 5 minutes before serving alongside a bowl of warm brown sugar sauce, for drizzling.
