Recipe Introduction
"Even breakfast brings out our inner casserole! This is an egg strata that is hearty but not too hearty (you don't want a big breakfast before a funeral)."
List of Ingredients
â—¦ Butter
â—¦ 12 slices white bread (regular white bread—nothing fancy, please)
â—¦ 1 pound bacon, fried
â—¦ 1 bunch green onions (about nine), sliced
â—¦ 3 cups finely shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
â—¦ A dozen eggs, beaten
â—¦ 4 cups half-and-half
â—¦ 1 teaspoon salt
â—¦ 1 teaspoon white pepper
â—¦ ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Recipe
Generously butter a 9 by 13-inch baking dish. Line the bottom with six pieces of bread. Crumble half the cooked bacon over the bread. Sprinkle half the onions and half the cheddar cheese over the bacon.
Mix the eggs, half-and-half, salt, and pepper until blended. Pour half of it evenly over the bread-cheese layers. Repeat the layering with remaining bread, bacon, onion, and cheddar cheese. Pour the remaining egg-cream mixture over the top. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
Bring casserole to room temperature.
Preheat the oven to 325° F. Bake casserole uncovered for 40 minutes, or until set.
