    Ironed Toast

    Source of Recipe

From "Dinner for Everyone" by Mark Bittman

    Recipe Introduction

"It's perfectly acceptable to eat breakfast for dinner. The only decision is whether you go savory or sweet. For those nights when you have an insatiable waffle craving and no time, go for Ironed Toast—nothing short of a revelation."

    List of Ingredients

â—¦ 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, or more as needed
    â—¦ 2 eggs
    â—¦ 1 cup milk
â—¦ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
â—¦ 8 slices brioche bread or challah (or white bread in a pinch), ½ inch thick is ideal
â—¦ Maple syrup, jam, or any other typing you like

    Recipe

Heat the oven to 200° F. Heat the waffle iron. Microwave the butter for a few seconds (or heat in a small pot) to soften it without fully melting. Whisk together the eggs, milk, and vanilla, if using, in a shallow dish.

Brush both surfaces of the waffle iron with brush or paper towels. Dunk a piece of bread in the egg mixture until saturated, then put it right onto the waffle iron. Close the lid and cook until golden and crisp. (The time depends on your appliance.) Keep the finished toast warm in the oven while you repeat with the remaining slices. Serve warm with maple syrup, jam, or any other toppings you like.

    Makes 4 servings
