Chocolate-Nut Brownies

- 3/4 cup natural cocoa, sifted
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick), melted
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1-1/3 cups sugar
- 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1-1/3 cups flour
- 3/4 cup walnuts
- 2 ounces bittersweet (70%) or dark chocolate, chopped
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° F. Coat a 9-inch square baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
- In mixing bowl, whisk together cocoa, baking soda, salt, butter and boiling water. Mix in sugar, eggs and vanilla. Fold in flour until just combined. Spread batter in prepared pan and sprinkle nuts and chocolate over batter.
- Bake 30 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely on wire rack. Cut into 16 squares. These brownies keep, wrapped in foil, for 3 days.
