    Unknown

    List of Ingredients

    • -- For the Crust --
    • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 7 Tbsp butter, cut up (no substitutes)
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tsp water
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
    • * * *
    • -- Toffee Layer --
    • 2 cups chopped walnuts
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup heavy or whipping cream
    • 3/4 cup butter, cut into 12 pieces (no substitutes)
    • *
    • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate squares, melted

    Instructions

    1. Heat oven to 375 degrees (F). Line a 13x9-inch baking pan with foil.

    2. Make the crust: Process flour, sugar, and butter in a food processor until coarse crumbs form. Add egg, water, and vanilla and process -- pulsing -- until the dough begins to form a ball. Pat dough into prepared pan and bake 20 to 25 minutes, until golden. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

    3. Make toffee layer: Reduce oven temperature to 350 degrees (F). Spread walnuts on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly browned and fragrant. Cool. Place sugar in a large, heavy skillet and cook 8 to 10 minutes, swirling pan occasionally, until completely melted and syrup is a deep caramel color. With a long-handled spoon, quickly and carefully stir in the cream until smooth (mixture may bubble rapidly). Stir in butter, 3 pieces at a time, until melted. Stir in walnuts. Immediately pour mixture over the cooled crust. Spread evenly and let stand until toffee layer is completely cooled.

    4. Spread melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer. Refrigerate bars for 1 hour, until chocolate sets.

      Cut into 2x1-inch bars.

      Makes 54 bars.
