Chocolate Caramel Brownies

- One 14-ounce bag caramels
- One 8-ounce can evaporated milk, divided
- One 18-1/4-ounce package German chocolate cake mix
- 1/2 cup margarine, melted
- One 6-ounce package semisweet chocolate pieces
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts
Instructions
- Melt caramels with 1/3 cup evaporated milk over low heat, stirring until smooth.
- In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup evaporated milk, cake mix and margarine; mix well. Press half of cake mixture onto bottom of ungreased 13 x 9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350º F for 6 minutes.
- Sprinkle chocolate pieces and 1/4 cup walnuts on top of the partially baked cake mixture. Drizzle caramel mixture over chocolate and nuts. Top with teaspoonfuls of remaining cake mixture, pressing it first into the palm of your hand to flatten. Cover caramel completely with cake mixture and press gently. Sprinkle with remaining walnuts. Bake at 350º for 18 to 20 minutes. Cool slightly; chill. Cut into bars.
Makes about 2 dozen bars.
