    Union House Brownies

    List of Ingredients


    • ¾ cup (1½ sticks) butter
    • 3 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
    • 1½ cups sugar
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 3 large eggs
    • ¾ cup flour
    • ¼ tsp salt
    • Frosting (recipe follows)


    Instructions


    1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Coat an 8-inch square pan with vegetable oil spray, or butter lightly.

    2. In heavy-bottomed pan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat, stirring until smooth. Cool, then stir in sugar and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, whisking until smooth. Stir in flour and salt.

    3. Pour into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven 25 to 35 minutes, or until top is crusty and cake tester comes out clean when inserted near center. When done, remove from oven and cool. When cool, frost, and then cut into bars.

      FROSTING

      • 2 Tbsp butter
      • 2 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
      • ½ tsp vanilla extract
      • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
      • 2 to 3 Tbsp heavy whipping cream

      In heavy-bottomed pan, melt butter and chocolate over low heat (or melt in microwave oven). Blend until smooth. Add vanilla and about half the powdered sugar; mix well. Gradually add remaining sugar, gradually adding cream as needed and beating until mixture reaches spreading consistency.



    Final Comments


    A coffee-flavored liqueur can be substituted for the vanilla extract.
