List of Ingredients
- 1-1/2 lbs. lean ground beef
- 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce, divided
- 1/2 cup bread crumbs
- 1-1/2 tsp dried basil, crushed
- 1 tsp dried oregano, crushed
- 1/4 tsp salt
- Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 thin slices mozzarella cheese, cut in half
- 4 large French rolls, split
- 1 Tbsp olive oil
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the ground beef, 6 tablespoons tomato sauce, the bread crumbs, basil, oregano, salt and pepper. Form into 4 large rectangular burgers to fit the rolls. Refrigerate until ready to use.
- Grill the hamburgers over medium coals for 6 minutes. Turn and spread with the remaining tomato sauce; top with the cheese slices. Continue to grill for about 6 to 7 more minutes for medium-rare meat.
- Drizzle the rolls with the olive oil and place cut-side down around the edge of the grill to toast lightly. Place the hamburgers on the rolls and serve.
Makes 4 servings.
Final Comments
The hamburgers can also be pan-fried for about 5 minutes on each side or to the desired degree of doneness. Place the cheese on top during the last few minutes of cooking time.
