    Source of Recipe

    "The Southern Living Party Cookbook"

    Recipe Introduction

"Just because this recipe calls for French bread cubes doesn't mean you have to use French bread cubes. You are the boss of this recipe, and no one can stop you from using donuts or croissants instead. I dare you!"

    List of Ingredients

    â—¦ ¼ cup (2 ounces) unsalted butter
â—¦ 7 cups French bread cubes
    â—¦ 2 cups whipping cream
    â—¦ 1 cup whole milk
    â—¦ 8 (1-ounce) bittersweet chocolate squares, chopped
â—¦ 5 egg yolks, lightly beaten
â—¦ â…” cup packed light brown sugar
    â—¦ 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    â—¦ Whiskey Sauce (recipe follows)
    â—¦ Chocolate shavings

    Recipe

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium. Add the bread; cook, stirring constantly, 3 minutes or until golden. Transfer to a greased 13 x 9-inch baking dish.

Bring the cream and milk to a boil over medium in the skillet. Remove from the heat; whisk in the chocolate, egg yolks, brown sugar, and vanilla. Pour over the bread cubes; let stand 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 325° F. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil; cut 6 small holes in the foil to allow steam to escape. Place the baking dish in a roasting pan. Add hot water to the pan to a depth of 1 ½ inches. Bake 1 hour and 45 minutes or until set. Remove from the water bath. Cool 30 minutes on a wire rack. Serve warm with the Whiskey Sauce and chocolate shavings, if desired.

    Serves 8 to 10

    â—¦ ½ cup (4 ounces) bourbon
