Bavarian Apple Torte

- 1/2 cup butter or margarine
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour

- 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp vanilla

- -- Topping --
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 4 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 450° F.
- For the crust:
In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar. Beat in the vanilla and blend in the flour. The mixture will be somewhat crumbly. Pat the mixture onto the bottom and 1½ inches high around the sides of a 9-inch springform pan.
- For the cheese filling:
In a mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese and sugar. Add the egg and vanilla, blending well. Pour the mixture into the pastry-lined pan and spread it to the edges.
- For the topping:
Combine the sugar and cinnamon. Toss the apples in the sugar mixture. Spoon the apples over the cream cheese layer; sprinkle the top with the almonds. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 400° F; continue baking for 25 minutes.
- Remove the torte from the oven. Run a knife around the edge to loosen the torte from the rim of the pan. Cool before removing the torte from the pan.
