From "Best of Taste of Home: The First 10 Years"

    List of Ingredients

    • 2 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
    • ½ cup boiling water
    • 1 cup sugar
    • ¼ cup shortening
    • 1 egg
    • ½ tsp vanilla

    • ½ tsp baking soda
    • ½ tsp salt
    • ¼ cup sour milk (1 tsp white vinegar and milk to make ¼ cup)
    • .
    • -- Frosting --
    • 1½ cups sugar
    • 1/3 cup milk
    • 2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
    • 2 Tbsp shortening
    • 1 Tbsp light corn syrup
    • ¼ tsp salt
    • 2 Tbsp butter
    • 1 tsp vanilla

    Instructions

    1. In a mixing bowl, stir chocolate and boiling water until blended. Cool. Add the sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla; mix well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to the chocolate mixture, alternately with the soured milk.

    2. Turn batter into a shortening-greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean.

    3. For frosting, combine the sugar, milk, melted chocolate, shortening, corn syrup, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Boil for 1½ minutes. Remove from heat. Set pan in a larger pan of ice water. Beat for 1 minute. Add butter and vanilla. Beat 10 minutes. Frost the cooled cake layer.

      Makes 1 (8-inch) layer.
