Little Chocolate Cake

List of Ingredients
- 2 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate
- ½ cup boiling water
- 1 cup sugar
- ¼ cup shortening
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp vanilla
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ cup sour milk (1 tsp white vinegar and milk to make ¼ cup)

- 1½ cups sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
- 2 Tbsp shortening
- 1 Tbsp light corn syrup
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, stir chocolate and boiling water until blended. Cool. Add the sugar, shortening, egg and vanilla; mix well. Combine flour, baking soda and salt. Gradually add to the chocolate mixture, alternately with the soured milk.
- Turn batter into a shortening-greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean.
- For frosting, combine the sugar, milk, melted chocolate, shortening, corn syrup, and salt in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Boil for 1½ minutes. Remove from heat. Set pan in a larger pan of ice water. Beat for 1 minute. Add butter and vanilla. Beat 10 minutes. Frost the cooled cake layer.
Makes 1 (8-inch) layer.
