    Apple Butter

    List of Ingredients


    • 6 lbs. apples (24 to 36 medium apples)
    • 2 quarts water
    • 1 quart sweet cider
    • 3 cups sugar
    • 1 Tbsp ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 tsp ground cloves


    Instructions


    1. Wash apples and cut into small pieces, leaving skins and cores. Add water and boil apples until they are soft, about 30 minutes. Put through a food mill or rub through a sieve.

    2. Boil down the cider to half its volume; add hot apple pulp, sugar, cinnamon and cloves to taste. Cook until thick enough to spread without running. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or scorching.

    3. Ladle into hot, sterilized canning jars, leaving 1/4-inch headroom, and seal. Process in a boiling-water bath for 5 minutes.

      Makes 6 pints.
