List of Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 2 cups unbleached flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 Tbsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2/3 cup shortening
- 1 cup milk
- 5 to 6 cups fresh or frozen Marion blackberries *
- .
- Heavy cream or vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- In a saucepan, stir together water and sugar. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 4 to 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved. Set aside to cool slightly.
- Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk to make a soft dough.
- Spread the dough evenly on the bottom of a greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Place the berries evenly over the top and pour the sugar mixture over fruit. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 45 minutes.
Serve hot or at room temperature with cream or ice cream.
Serves 12
Final Comments
* You can successfully substitute blueberries, raspberries, or sliced peaches for the Marion blackberries.
