    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup water
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 2 cups unbleached flour
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 2 Tbsp baking powder
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 2/3 cup shortening
    • 1 cup milk
    • 5 to 6 cups fresh or frozen Marion blackberries *
    • .
    • Heavy cream or vanilla ice cream


    Instructions


    1. In a saucepan, stir together water and sugar. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 4 to 5 minutes or until the sugar is dissolved. Set aside to cool slightly.

    2. Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Cut in the shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add the milk to make a soft dough.

    3. Spread the dough evenly on the bottom of a greased 13x9-inch baking pan. Place the berries evenly over the top and pour the sugar mixture over fruit. Bake in a preheated 375-degree oven for 45 minutes.

      Serve hot or at room temperature with cream or ice cream.

    Final Comments


    * You can successfully substitute blueberries, raspberries, or sliced peaches for the Marion blackberries.
