    Hot Apple Cider Mugs

    Source of Recipe

From "Gather At Home" by Monika Hibbs

    Recipe Introduction

"The comfort of sipping a cup of hot apple cider on a crisp fall day as the leaves start to change color and the air gets cooler is something I look forward to every year. Carving out apples to use as mugs is a fun way to enjoy the warm drink. Be sure to pick out the biggest apples you can find—the bigger, the better! Making these mugs is a fun DIY project to do with your kids after a day at the apple orchard. Get them to scoop out the center of each apple, brush lemon juice into it, and add the cinnamon stick garnish."

    List of Ingredients

â—¦ 8 large apples, such as Honeycrisp, Jonagold, or Red Delicious
    â—¦ Paring knife
    â—¦ Melon baller
    â—¦ Juice of 2 lemons
    â—¦ Pastry brush

    For serving:
    â—¦ 4 ¼ cups apple cider
    â—¦ 8 cinnamon sticks

    Recipe

Use the paring knife to cut off the top of each apple. Discard the tops.

Using the melon baller, scoop out the flesh in the center of the apples, leaving about a ½-inch edge of flesh all the way around. Take care not to scoop too close to the bottom of the apple or you may puncture the skin and your cup will leak.

Generously brush the inside and edge of each apple with the lemon juice to prevent the apple flesh from browning.

Pour the apple cider into a medium pot and bring it to a gentle simmer over medium heat before dividing it evenly among the apple mugs. Garnish each with a cinnamon stick.

    Makes 8 mugs
