    Source of Recipe

    From "The Old-Fashioned Cookbook"

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 pkg. active dry yeast
    • 1/4 cup warm water (105º to 115º F)
    • 4 cups sifted flour
    • 1/4 cup sugar
    • 2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    • 1-1/2 cups warm milk (105º to 115º F)
    • 1/4 cup shortening, melted
    • 1 cup seedless raisins or currants, halved or quartered
    • 2 eggs, beaten
    • Cooking oil, for frying
    • Confectioners' sugar or cinnamon sugar

    Instructions

    1. Soften yeast in warm water.

    2. Sift together flour, sugar, salt and nutmeg. Combine milk and shortening. Stir in softened yeast, raisins, eggs and flour mixture. Mix thoroughly. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 2 hours.

    3. Drop level tablespoonfuls of dough into deep hot fat (360º to 365º F). Fry until lightly brown, turning midway, about 3 to 4 minutes. Drain on paper towels and dust with confectioners' sugar or cinnamon sugar.

      Makes about 6 dozen.
