Salisbury Steak

Recipe Introduction
"When I was growing up, whenever my family went out to dinner, I'd order the elegant-sounding Salisbury steak, because my mom didn't make it at home. Although it's made with ground meat, Salisbury steak has more of a meatloaf-like consistency and is served with onions, mushrooms, and brown gravy. You can make this in no time by using a few shortcuts—like a pouch of onion soup mix for seasoning and a jar of beef gravy for the finish. I've always loved this dish with steamed broccoli. You may also serve it with buttered noodles or mashed potatoes."
List of Ingredients
â—¦ 1 pound lean ground beef
â—¦ â…“ cup plain dry bread crumbs
â—¦ 1 (1.4-ounce) pouch onion soup mix
â—¦ 1 large egg, lightly beaten
â—¦ 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
â—¦ 1 (12-ounce) jar brown gravy
â—¦ 1 large yellow onion, halved and thinly sliced
â—¦ 5 large white mushrooms, quartered
â—¦ 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme leaves
â—¦ ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Recipe
Combine the beef, bread crumbs, onion soup mix, and egg. Using clean hands, combine the ingredients well. Divide the mixture into four oval patties about 1 inch thick.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 1 minute per side. Add the gravy, onion, mushrooms, thyme, and pepper.
Cover the skillet, then reduce the heat to medium-low and cook until the patties are cooked through, 15 to 17 minutes. Serve the hot patties with the gravy.
