    Source of Recipe

    From "Scratch" by Maria Rodale

    Recipe Introduction

"This was regular summer party food when I was a kid. It's my mother's recipe, straight from her sticky recipe card."

    List of Ingredients

    â—¦ 2 tablespoons olive oil
    â—¦ 2 pounds ground beef
    â—¦ 1 cup chopped onion
    â—¦ 1 cup ketchup
    â—¦ ½ cup water
    â—¦ 2 tablespoons mustard
    â—¦ 2 tablespoons vinegar
    â—¦ 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    â—¦ 2 tablespoons sugar
    â—¦ 1 teaspoon salt
â—¦ ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
    â—¦ 4 to 6 hamburger buns

    Recipe

In a large cast iron skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the beef and onion and cook for 6 to 8 minutes, until the beef is well browned and the onion is softened.

Add the ketchup, water, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, sugar, salt, and pepper and stir to combine. Cook for 15 minutes, or until thickened slightly.

To serve, divide the mixture among the bottoms of the buns and sandwich with the tops.

    Makes 4 to 6 sandwiches
