Recipe Introduction
"Whether you call it a submarine, a grinder, a hoagie, or a hero, this Italian-American sandwich, layered with salami, mortadella, and provolone, is an undisputed classic. Make a batch of these hearty sandwiches for a picnic or pack into lunch boxes."
List of Ingredients
◦ 4 crusty French rolls, split
◦ 3 tablespoons olive oil
◦ 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
◦ 1 teaspoon dried oregano
◦ 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
◦ pound each thinly sliced Genoa salami and mortadella
◦ pound thinly sliced provolone cheese
◦ 1 large, firm tomato, cut into 8 slices
◦ ⅓ head iceberg lettuce, finely shredded
Recipe
Arrange the split rolls, cut sides up, on a work surface. Sprinkle the bread evenly with the oil, and then with the vinegar, oregano, and finally the Parmesan.
Layer the bottom halves of the rolls with the salami, mortadella, and provolone, dividing them evenly. Top each layered half with two tomato slices and one-fourth of the lettuce. Close the sandwiches with the roll tops and serve, or wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate until serving.

❧ Make it Your Own:
A good ratio for a typical hero is about pound sliced meat to about pound sliced cheese. For the meats, try turkey, hot coppa, pepperoni, soppressata, or Black Forest ham. For the cheese, try sharp Cheddar, pepper Jack, Swiss, or smoked mozzarella.
