    Italian Submarine

    Source of Recipe

From "Taste of Home American Summer Cookbook"

    Recipe Introduction

"My husband grew up eating this flavorful sandwich, which his mother used to make. This sub can easily be made a few hours ahead and refrigerated, then served with chips, veggies, and dip for a delicious meal."

    List of Ingredients

â—¦ 1 loaf (1 pound) unsliced Italian bread
    â—¦ 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil
â—¦ 2 to 4 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
    â—¦ 1 to 1 ½ teaspoons dried oregano
â—¦ 1 medium tomato, thinly sliced
â—¦ ½ pound thinly sliced deli ham
â—¦ ¼ pound sliced provolone cheese
â—¦ ¼ pound thinly sliced hard salami

    Recipe

Cut bread horizontally in half. Hollow out bottom half, leaving a ¼-inch shell (save the removed bread for another use or discard).

Brush cut surfaces of bread with oil; sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and oregano. Layer bottom half with remaining ingredients. Replace bread top. Cut into eight slices.

    Makes 8 servings

    • Make-Ahead:
Make this sandwich the day before. Do not cut into slices, but wrap this entire sandwich tightly in plastic wrap for freshness and easy travel.
