Recipe Introduction
"Here's a very straightforward sauce you can pull together with ingredients you probably already have on hand in your pantry and fridge, for all your emergency barbecue needs. Use whatever mustard, sugar, hot sauce, and vinegar you have on hand—it's all good."
List of Ingredients
â—¦ 1 cup ketchup
â—¦ 3 tablespoons honey
â—¦ 2 tablespoons mustard
â—¦ 2 tablespoons brown sugar
â—¦ 1 tablespoon hot sauce
â—¦ 1 tablespoon soy sauce
â—¦ 1 tablespoon vinegar
â—¦ 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
â—¦ ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
â—¦ Kosher salt
Recipe
In a medium saucepan, combine the ketchup, honey, mustard, brown sugar, hot sauce, soy sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and cayenne and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Season to taste with salt and taste for balance. If the sauce needs more sweetness, add more honey. If it needs more heat, add more hot sauce. If it gets too thick, add a splash of water. Store, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Makes about 1 ½ cups
