    Classic Southern Fried Shrimp

    Source of Recipe

From "Deep South Dish" by Mary Foreman

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 pound raw medium shrimp
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 cup milk
    • 2 cups self-rising flour
    • 1 tsp Cajun seasoning
    • ½ tsp Old Bay Seasoning
    • ½ tsp kosher salt
    • ¼ to ½ tsp black pepper
    • 1 tsp lemon pepper

    Instructions

    1. Preheat deep fryer or heat oil in a large heavy pot to 350° F. Peel and devein shrimp, rinsing well. Pat dry with paper towels.

    2. Whisk together egg and milk, and add shrimp to mixture.
In separate bowl, stir flour together with all seasonings. Dip shrimp in flour mixture to coat, then place in colander set over a plate or tray. Toss shrimp in flour mixture a second time, place back in colander, and shake well to remove excess flour.

    3. Fry in small batches, 3 to 4 minutes per batch, or until golden brown. Shake fryer basket, and turn out onto a platter lined with paper towels, then sprinkle with just a bit of additional salt.

      Makes 4 to 6 servings

      • Batter Fried:
Add ½ cup flour along with 2 tablespoons melted and cooled butter, to beaten egg and milk. Dip shrimp in batter, shake off to drain, then roll in seasoned flour before frying.
