    Super Bowl: Cheesy Bread Dip

    Source of Recipe

    Tom Bankovich

    List of Ingredients

    • 1 whole loaf round bread, such as sourdough (about 1-1/2 pounds)
    • 16 ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded
    • 16 ounces sour cream
    • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
    • 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1-1/2 cups diced boiled ham
    • 2 bunches green onions (green part only), washed, ends removed, chopped fine
    • 5 hot chile peppers from a jar, minced, such as Vlasic hot chile peppers
    • 1 Tbsp melted butter

    Instructions

    1. Preheat the oven to 375° F.

    2. To prepare the bread: Cut off the top of the bread as you would a pumpkin, saving the top. Hollow out the bread loaf, leaving an inner shell about 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick. Break the bread pieces that have been removed into bite-sized pieces and set them aside.

    3. In a large bowl, mix together the Cheddar cheese, sour cream, cream cheese, and Worcestershire sauce, making sure that the cream cheese is blended in well. Add the ham, green onions, and chile peppers; mix well. Place the cheese mixture into the hollow bread loaf. Replace the bread top onto the loaf. Double-wrap the loaf in heavy-duty foil.

    4. Place the wrapped bread in the oven and bake for 45 minutes. Reduce heat to 325° and bake for an additional 45 minutes or until the Cheddar cheese is melted throughout.

    5. Just before serving, place the leftover bread pieces on a baking sheet, drizzle them with melted butter, and bake them for 5 minutes, or until they are semi-crispy. Use them for dipping. Remove the bread loaf from the oven, unwrap it, and let it sit about 5 minutes before serving. Serve with crispy bread, crackers, tortilla chips, or cut-up vegetables for dipping.

      Makes about 25 servings.
