* Get them on paper. Write everything down. Ask where special ingredients have been bought, and record the amount and type of ingredients.
* Be accurate. Bring your measuring spoons, cups and a scale with you so you can decipher a "handful" of sugar or a "tea cup full" of flour into terms you can understand.
* Use the right tools. Record the mixing utensils and bakeware used, because it will affect the appearance, texture and consistency of the recipe.
* Test your recipe. It may take a few tries to perfect your family "expert's" technique. Record any additional changes you may have made to this recipe.
* Recipe for keeps: Create a recipe card and keep it in a scrapbook or recipe box, or input the recipe on your personal computer. Be sure to share it with other family members.
-- Tips for the Virtual Recipe Box --
* To ensure your favorite recipes stand the test of time, create a "recipe box file" on your computer.
* Input recipes in easy-to-read fonts for daily use. Fragile original recipe cards won't last forever, so scan them into the file to preserve the look and feel of those cherished heirlooms.
* Scan photos of family and friends enjoying your favorite foods.
* Save the file to CD or disk.
* E-mail the file to family and friends.
