List of Ingredients
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 3 to 4 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
- 8 to 10 large Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced medallion-style
- Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
- 3/4 lb. Emmenthal or Gruyère cheese, grated
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté onions in butter until deep golden brown, about 20 minutes. Cook slowly to caramelize.
- Grease a 9 x 13-inch or large oval baking dish. Layer half of the potato slices in a shingle fashion and season. Top with half of the onions and cheese. Repeat next layer, ending with cheese.
- Bake in a preheated 350º F oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until potatoes are fork-tender. Cover loosely with foil if potatoes get too brown before cooking time is finished. Remove from oven and let stand for several minutes. Cut into squares or wedges.
