    1 3/4 c. flour, sifted
    1 t. baking powder
    1/2 t. soda
    1 t. salt
    1 1/2 c.sugar
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 c. milk
    2 eggs, unbeaten
    2 sq chocolate, melted
    1 t. red food coloring

    Recipe



    Sift together dry ingredients. Add shortening and 2/3 milk and beat for 2 minutes. Add remaining milk, eggs, chocolate and coloring. Beat for 2 minutes. Use 2 round 8" layer pans or one square 8 1/2", greased and floured or lined with paper. Bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes for layers or 45-50 minutes for square cake.

    You can use 3 T. cocoa and 1/2 T. shortening to substitute for 1 square of chocolate.
