    2 1/4 c. cake flour, sifted
    1 1/2 c. sugar
    3 1/2 t. baking powder
    1 t. salt
    1/2 c. shortening
    1 t. vanilla
    1 c. milk
    4 eggs
    1 sq unsweetened chocolate, melted
    1/4 t. soda
    1 T. warm water
    1/4 t. red food coloring

    Recipe



    Sift together into bowl flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add shortening, vanilla and 2/3 c. of milk. Beat on slow to medium speed for 2 minutes. Add remaining milk and eggs. Beat 2 more minutes. Then pour 2/3rds of batter into pan. To the remaining batter add chocolate mixed with soda, warm water and red food coloring. Beat for 1/2 minutes. Pour chocolate batter here and there over white. Cut with knife for marble effect. Put into8 1/2" square pan or 2- 8" layer pans. Bake at 350 for30-35 minutes for layers or 50-55 minutes for square.
