4 squares baking chocolate
1 cup butter
2 1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
3 cup cake flour, sifted
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
5 eggs, separated

Recipe



Cream butter and sugar together. Melt chocolate over simmering water and add to butter and sugar creamed together well. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt together. Alternately add milk and the flour mixture to the chocolate mixture, then the well beaten egg yolks. Last add the egg whites which have been stiffly whipped and the vanilla. Pour into three well greased and floured 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Assemble with thick white or chocolate frosting.
