Wash melon and wipe dry. To keep the basket from rolling, cut a thin slice from the bottom-center of rind to make a flat surface. With a nontoxic marker, draw a line around the melon lengthwise to mark the center. Use a circle measuring 2 ½ " to 3" in diameter (lid, cardboard, etc.) to mark scallops completely around the basket - using the centerline as a guide. Draw a line across the top to mark the center of the basket handle. Use the circle to mark scallops for handle. Use a soapy cloth to remove unwanted markings. Begin carving only after you are content with the basket's appearance.
With a large, sharp knife, slice melon between scalloped areas - removing flesh as well as rind. With a smaller, sharp knife, carefully sculpt the scalloped shape of sides of basket and handle. Use a melon-ball cutter to cut the flesh into balls. Discard as many seeds as possible. Place balls in a strainer and chill. Scoop out remaining flesh, leaving the shell clean. Use a soapy cloth to remove traces of markings on rind.
Fill shell with your choice of fresh fruits (fresh pineapple wedges, strawberries, watermelon balls, cantaloupe balls, honeydew melon balls and/or maraschino cherries).
Mix
12oz concentrated pineapple-orange juice
3tbsp maraschino cherry juice
2-3shots fruit flavored brandy
Just before serving, drizzle over contents of basket. One large watermelon serves 12 to 15 people.
