Easy Macaroni & Cheese
My kids would prefer this over the boxed any day. This recipes DOES NOT call for butter, I don't know what would happen or how it would taste with it. I have never used butter in it.
Let me know what ya think about this recipe. My mother-in-law told me this version of Mac n Cheese & we have made it this way ever since. I rarely buy the boxed anymore, only when I am in one of my I'm Lazy moods.
List of Ingredients
2 cups elbow macaroni
about 1/3 of 2 lb. block of pasteurized prepared cheese product
about half of 5 oz. can of evaporated milk*
* amount depends on how thick or thin you like your mac n cheese.
Recipe
Boil the macaroni till done. In the meantime slice the cheese (if less is desired do so, but this way it is cheesy, the way my family likes it). When the macaroni is done, add cheese slices to the macaroni, keep stirring till cheese melts, there may be some chunks of cheese but keep stirring over low heat, it will melt. Add a little of evaporated milk at a time to macaroni cheese till thoroughly combined or to your liking. Don't add too much milk as it will get runny & it will have a evaporated milk taste, & then you may not have the cheesy taste.
Variations:
1. I sometimes put a little chopped cooked onion in it for a different taste.
2. You can add chopped spam into it for a quick meal.
3. I also use this with 1 drained can of tuna, & add some peas for a quick Tuna Casserole. This is really yummy.
Ideas are endless as to what to put with macaroni & cheese. Add what you like.
NOTE: Just to let ya know the evaporated milk gives it a better flavor than regular milk. Try it both ways. Either way it is good. Some use half & half instead of evaporated milk. I have never done it with half & half, so I can't tell you what that is like.
