Su-Su's Gold Cake
Note: This has no leavening in it, the eggs do the work of baking powder or baking soda.
Su-Su was my husband's great aunt, a legendary cook. She was also a woman you didn't cross, if she said sift, you sifted.
List of Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Crisco
- 1/2 cup butter or margerine
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 5 eggs
- 2 cups flour
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Either sift the flour, or lightly measure it. This is the only recipe that I sift the flour for because she did, and the cake was lightest when she made it.
- Cream the Crisco and butter with the sugar until thoroughly creamed together and light.
- Add vanilla, salt and eggs and beat together well.
- Add flour a little at a tiime.
- Grease and flour a 9" tube pan or the equivalent.
- Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 40-45 minutes.
- Let cool for 10 minutes, then turn out of pan.
