    I still have the original paper where my grandmother wrote down this recipe.


    List of Ingredients


    • 1 cup dates
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup water
    • 1/2 cup nuts, chopped
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1 egg, beaten


    Instructions


    1. Combine dates, sugar and water in a saucepan. Cook over direct heat, stirring constantly until thick.
    2. Cool. Add nuts.
    3. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and cloves.
    4. Cream shortening and brown sugar. Add egg.
    5. Blend in dry ingredients gradually; mix thourghly.
    6. Spread half of dough in well-greased 12x8"pan.
    7. Spread date mixture over dough in pan and cover with remaining dough.
    8. Bake at 375* for 10 to 12 minutes.
    9. Cut into bars or squares.
    10. Yield: 3 1/2 dozen bars
