    Recipe Introduction

The result of Jo McGruder's memory of a special candy sold at Famous Barr in St. Louis....most department stores had in-house confectionaries, run by professional candy makers. Many of them were immigrants from Europe after World War II. Heavenly Hash was chocolate, pecans, vanilla and marshmallows, sold by the lb...the following is Jo's creation...

    List of Ingredients

    19.8 oz. brownie mix
    1 cup chopped pecans
    3 cups miniature marshmallows
    1 cup pecans, coarsely broken
2 [1 oz] squares unsweetened chocolate
    1/3 cup whole milk
    1/2 cup[1 stick] butter
    16 oz powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon real vanilla, NOT imitation

    Recipe

Preheat oven to 350 degrees...prepare brownie mix per directions. Add chopped pecans...bake 25 minutes in a greased 9x13 pan...remove from oven, sprinkle with marshmallows and then broken pecans...combine chocolate, milk, butter in a heavy saucepan. Cook over low heat until chocolate and butter melt, stirring often.. remove from heat and transfer to a mixing bowl...add powdered sugar and vanilla, beat at low speed until smooth, spread icing over marshmallows. Let brownies cool in pan on wire rack. Then cut into bars...makes 24 small squares, or 12 large squares or 1 hide-in-the-closet-with-a-gallon-of-cold-milk-and-pig-out serving

This one first place in the dessert category in a local contest of favorite recipes prepared in a 9x13 pan...

If you haven't treated yourself to a bottle of Real vanilla , instead of the imitation, put it on the shopping list for next time...yes ,it will cost you a few dollars...yes..there is no comparison..no, I don't use it in everything...but some recipes are just so special to deserve the very best!!
