Recipe Introduction

St. Mary of Victories Church, built in the 19th century, is just south of the Gateway Arch on the Mississippi river front in downtown St. Louis.. On Mon., Tues., and Wed .they serve lunch [744 S. Third Street} and on the weekends their homemade sweets ..strawberry cheesecake, apple strudel, and so forth ,are for sale at Soulard Market, a few blocks away John Rudy, Kitchen Manager St. Mary of Victories Church St. Louis Missouri 2/3 cup shortening [part butter, softened]
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
combine in bowl and cream until smooth..

sift together..
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt

stir into creamed mixture

add 1/2 cup chopped nuts and
6 oz chocolate chips

drop by rounded tsp about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet..
bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes until delicately browned, but still soft..

cool slightly before removing from cookie sheets..

for softer, more rounded cookies, use 1 3/4 cup sifted flour..
