    Old Town St. Charles.. located right across the river from St. Louis, is Old Town St. Charles -- an area of shops and boutiques housed in original turn of the century old buildings. Among these is Magpie's Restaurant, located at 903 South Main Street. In the summer, there is also patio dining. One of their signature offerings is Baked Potato Soup, which is to die for

    List of Ingredients




    2 quarts day old French bread
    2 Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored and cut in chunks)
    1/2 C. dried cranberries
    1/3 C. raisins
    6 eggs, slightly beaten
    6 C. Half & Half
    1 Tablespoon. vanilla
    1/2 C. brown sugar
    1/2 C. white sugar
    1/2 tsp. cinnamon
    1.2 tsp. grated nutmeg
    caramel or chocolate sauce, or both

    Recipe



    Tear bread into small pieces. Place in large mixing bowl. Add apples, cranberries and raisins. Mix bread and fruit with eggs, milk, vanilla, sugars and spices. Soak for 1/2 hour. Pour into large rectangular baking pan at least 2-1/2 inches deep. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Spoon into individual dishes and top with caramel or chocolate sauce (or both). Serves 8.
