    Recipe Introduction

Merb's Candies, located in South St. Louis, is one of the oldest candy stores in the St. Louis area. They are famous this time of year for their HUGE taffy apples studded all over with chopped pecans -- a TDF treat! Normally, they run $3.49 EACH -- but last week they were on special at the Dierberg's Stores for $2.50 each (and you-know-who got six of them).

    List of Ingredients

    1 C. granulated sugar
    1 C. dark molasses
    1 Tablespoon. white vinegar
    1 Tablespoon. baking soda

    Recipe

In two quart saucepan, combine sugar, molasses, and vinegar. Cook over medium heat, steaming and washing inside walls of pan to prevent crystals from forming. When candy thermometer reads 290 degrees F., remove pan from heat. Cool slightly, add baking soda. Mixture will foam. Pour onto baking sheet. When cooed, break into pieces. May be served plain or DIPPED IN CHOCOLATE -- yummy, dipped in chocolate is the way to go on these!
