Recipe Introduction
I bet if you looked in your grandmother's recipe file you would find a similar recipe...these were very popular and a dessert that was good for you...My great aunt and uncle lived in Ferguson on Adelle Ave. for over 49 yrs...both grew up in rural Florissant in large farming families. Clara was my grandmother's younger sister. Uncle Bud [John] was a descendant of John Patterson, ..a soldier in the Revolutionary War who settled in the area above the Missouri River. The family cemetery was at the edge of the original farm alongside Cold Water Creek. And cared for by generations of Patterson. A few years ago the farm was sold to the local gas company for the rich deposits of natural gas that lie beneath the surface...today the cemetery is cared for by volunteers and the Daughters of the American Revolution
..one of the cousins is the historian and caretaker of the cemetery...this January, on a bitter cold day...Aunt Clara, at age 99, the last of the 9 Hughes children was buried at Coldwater Creek Cemetery. During the time of the small pox epidemic and influenza scares, many neighboring family members were quietly buried at night...not all the graves have markers...
the yearly Memorial day services used to be at sunrise...these days, they are scheduled for 10 a.m., with political speakers, and over 300 unrelated participants, greatly outnumbering the family. I miss the days when it was a family gathering with a picnic afterwards, featuring....
1 cup Raisins
1 cup water...bring to a boil in a saucepan and remove from heat...stir in
1/2 cup butter or shortening and cool to lukewarm..
Stir in 1 cup sugar and 1 egg...
Sift together the dry ingredients...
1 3/4 cup flour 1 tsp b. soda
pinch of salt 1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg 1/2 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp. cloves
Beat into the raisin mixture and pour into a greased 10 1/2 x 15 1/2 x 1 pan and bake 12 minutes...DO NOT OVERBAKE...drizzle with a glaze of warm water, confectioners sugar and vanilla...cool and cut into bars...makes 4 dozen..
we lived across the street from Clara and Bud on Adelle Ave. when my children were growing up. My sister lives 2 doors down. The children could always count on a cold glass of milk and raisin bars when they visited the Pattersons...as adults they now realize how lucky they were to live in a neighborhood of loving family...this is the most requested recipe on our family website and shows up at all reunions...but you know. They don't have that Uncle Bud "touch"...
