Recipe Introduction
1932 recipe
my first "Taffy Pull" was in Girl Scouts at the age of 13..for our first co-ed party. that’s old talk for bring-a-date.. spinning records. Perry Como was #1 on the charts at the time. I was so shy I couldn't ask anyone, so took my brother Kenny who was a year younger,. We both were not real pleased with the arrangement. Since his sudden death in January, I would give anything to take him to a party now. So whenever I fix this recipe I think of us pushing and pulling each other around the floor of the Aubuchon's basement to the tune of "Catch a Falling Star"..and blistering our hands, pulling taffy
I am certain that Mrs. Aubuchon did not have a candy thermometer, but probably dropped a small piece into a cup of water to test it.
List of Ingredients
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup vinegar
pinch of salt
1/8 tsp cream of tartar
2 Tab butter [no substitute]
Recipe
mix all in a heavy saucepan and boil to hard ball stage [265 to 270 degrees]..
pour into a well buttered pan and cool. Pull the taffy [with clean hands please!!] until it becomes white and porous, then cut into 1" pieces... if saving, wrap in small square of wax paper and twist the ends..
