    Simple Basic Recipe for Yellow Lentils

    1 teaspoon peeled and finely chopped fresh root ginger
    2 cloves finely chopped garlic
    1 teaspoon turmeric powder
    1 teaspoon chilli powder optional
    1teaspoon cuminseeds optional
    1 medium sized onion sliced fine
    Salt to Taste
    1 tablespoon of oil

    Recipe



    wash the lentils thoroughly and soak in water for 30 mins. Drain. Put in a pressure cooker with approx.1.2 litre of water .Bring to boil and remove scum. Add ginger,garlic and turmeric. pressure cook 10 mins. ( a little more than 1 whistle) . The lentils should be soft mashable but not a puree. Should retain its character.
    Add salt to taste.( water and Lentils should NOT remain separate but should be a homogenous entity)
    For the Tempering
    Heat oil in a separate pan,add cumin seeds,when they splutter add sliced onions,fry on medium heat till golden brown. Add red chilli powder and remove from Fire. pour over the cooked lentils just before serving. Can be served with Rice as well as Indian Chappatis ( Like Tortillas). Accompaniments, Fresh Bio-Yoghurt,Papads,pickles,chutneys.
