    1-1/2 cups split red lentils
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/4 teaspoon turmeric
    3 tablespoons butter
    1/2 teaspoon whole cumin seed
    1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic
    1 cup finely chopped onion
    pinch sugar
    2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
    3 tablespoons chopped, canned, green chilies
    2 teaspoons Indian curry spice mix (curry powder)
    2 tablespoons lemon juice

    Recipe



    Cover lentils with water. Add salt and turmeric and bring to a boil. Simmer until tender, about 15 minutes, adding more water as needed.
    Heat butter in a skillet. Add cumin seeds and garlic and cook until they start to brown. Add onions and sugar and cook until onions are soft. Add ginger, green chilies, curry powder, and lemon juice. Cook 3 to 4 minutes and add to lentils. Stir and taste for seasoning. Serves 4 to 6.
