Recipe Introduction
This poetic recipe was presented and prepared by my third-grade teacher's sister.
1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk
2 eggs beaten as fine as silk,
Salt and nutmeg, lemon will do,
Baking powder teaspoons 2,
Lightly stir the flour in.
Roll on the bread board not too thin.
Cut in squares, twists or rings,
Drop with care, the doughy things.
Into the fat that briskly swells
Evenly the spongy cells.
Watch with care the time for turning,
Fry them brown just short of burning.
Roll in sugar, serve when cool
Price a quarter for this rule.
(Use enough flour to make a soft dough that can be rolled.)
