Braided Christmas Bread
List of Ingredients
1 package Active Dry Yeast
1/4 cup Water, lukewarm
3/4 cup Milk, lukewarm
1 Tbs. Granulated Sugar
1 tsp. Salt
1 large Egg
3 cups All-purpose Flour
1 Egg Yolk, slightly beaten
Recipe
Dissolve the yeast and 1/2 teaspoon in the lukewarm water;
set aside.
Combine the milk, remaining sugar, salt and egg in a large
bowl, blending well. Stir in the dissolved yeast. Gradually add
the flour until a soft dough forms.
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until
smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Place the dough in a
greased bowl, cover and let raise until doubled in volume, about
2 hours.
Punch the dough down and divide it into 2 equal portions. On a
lightly floured surface, shape each piece of dough into a rope,
about 14-inches long. Twist the pieces together, crossing one
over the other, and pinching the ends to hold the braid together.
Place the dough on a greased cookie sheet and allow to rise for
another hour.
Pre-heat the oven to 425-F degrees. Brush the bread with the egg
yolk and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden. Slice to serve
when cool. Makes 1 Loaf.
