    Place an un-opened can of sweetened condensed milk in a large saucepan of boiling water. Boil for 1 ½ hours for a light brown caramel and 2 hours for a thick darker brown caramel. Pour into a cooked pastry shell or prepared crumb crust and top with whipped cream.
    Be really careful when boiling condensed milk. Never leave it unattended as the pot can easily boil dry and the can will explode! You can boil several at one time, as un-opened they store for months with no problems at all. It is common for it to be rather lumpy, but these lumps will go as the mixture cools.
