Tea Scones

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup raisins, currants, snipped figs or chopped prunes
1/4 cup milk
Preheat the oven to 400°. Stir together the flour, sugar, cream of tartar, soda
& salt. Blend in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture
resembles fine bread crumbs. Add remaining ingredients. Mix with a fork until
just combined. Divide into 2 parts & turn each part out onto a floured board.
Do not handle excessively. Flatten with a rolling pin into circles 1/2' or more
thick. Cut into triangles & place on a greased & floured baking sheet. Bake
for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm & lightly buttered.
