List of Ingredients
2 c. sugar
1/4 c. white corn syrup
2/3 c. water
1 Tbls. cider vinegar
1 Tbls. butter
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Instructions
Combine 1st five ingredients in a heavy 5 quart pan.
Mix well and cook slowly until sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly.
Increase heat to medium and boil, without stirring, until syrup seperates into threads which are hard but not brittle when a little is dropped in cold water. (270�)
Pour onto a buttered, large, shallow pan or platter. Sprinkle pure vanilla extract over the top.
As edges cool, fold toward the center to prevent them from hardening before center is read to pull.
When cool enough to handle, gather into a ball. (The taffy will stick to the pan if you try to remove it before it has coold sfficiently to handle.)
Pull with lightly buttered fingers until candy is white and firm.
Stretch into a long rope, 1/2-inch wide. Cut into 1-inch pieces with scissors. Wrap each piece in waxed paper or cellophane if it is to be kept.
Yield: 1 lb.
VARIATION: Add 1/2 c. chopped black walnuts to the syrup just before it is poured onto the buttered pan. Cool and pull as in the above directions.
