My Aunt has made this date nut bread for years and years.
List of Ingredients
1 1/2 cups pitted dates, chopped
1 1/2 cups boiling water
2 Tablespoons shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
2 3/4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 cup chopped nuts, such as walnuts
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
Recipe
Put dates in a bowl, cover with boiling water. Add shortening, sugar and salt. Let stand until cool. Add egg, cream of tartar and beat well. Add nuts, vanilla and Mix thoroughly. Turn into a greased and floured loaf pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 75 minutes.
