Emma, Best Sugar Cookies
My neighbor Emma always had some of these in the cookie jar. It was so easy to stop by for coffee, knowing I could eat some. It took a long time to get the recipe from her. There is no doubt that you will enjoy them as much as I have.
1 cup butter, softened
1/2 cup confectioners sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
1 egg, lightly beaten, 1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
Preheat oven to 350 F
Mix 1/4 cup sugar with nutmeg and set aside.
In a large bowl cream butter,confectioners sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar until well blended.
Add beaten egg and vanilla.
In another bowl, whisk or sift together flour, soda and cream of tartar.
Stir into creamed mixture
Chill about 2 hours or until dough is easy to handle.
Shape into 3/4 inch balls.
Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Press to flatten to 1 1/2 inch with glass buttered on bottom and dipped into nutmeg- sugar for each cookie.
Sprinkle with any remaining sugar mixture on tops.
Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden.
Remove to racks to cool.
