1/2 cup shortening
2 1/2 cups sifted flour cake
1/2 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup maple syrup- milk mixture

Make the maple syrup syrup mixture by combining one cup of maple syrup and 1/2 cup milk. Place shortening in bowl. Add flour, sugar, baking powder and salt, which have been sifted together. Add vanilla and one cup maple-milk mixture. Pour in pan and bake at 350º for 30-35 minutes.
Frost and fill with a fluffy egg white frosting. Cook together 1/2 cup maple syrup and 1/4 cup sugar to soft ball stage. Cook slightly and then drizzle over icing. Sprinkle with nuts if desired.
